What are Hidden Barriers?

It's not just you - there is a BIG problem, we call that problem 'hidden barriers.'

Barriers exist to a true level playing field. These barriers include individual as well as organizational roadblocks. While some of these barriers are obvious, such as sexual harassment or race discrimination, much of our work-lives are impacted by subtler, day-to-day slights that often go unnoticed. While seemingly small in nature, these subtle barriers and their cumulative effect distort the playing field giving advantage to some while disadvantaging others.

The Hidden Barriers campaign aims to demonstrate the breadth, depth and nuances of these hidden barriers and explore how they play out in the workplace experiences of people of color, women, those with alternate sexuality, and other marginalized people in the workplace.

Examples of Hidden Barriers in the Workplace (partial list)

  • Using stereotypes to guide your business decisions and interactions.
  • Bullying and intimidating employees to affect a desired outcome.
  • Conducting business in social groups, which by their very make-up, excludes others.
